TOP BENEFITS OF EATING EGGS

Eggs as they may seem humble and small but have impressive health credentials. Both egg white and the yolk are very rich in nutrients-vitamins, proteins, and minerals with the yolk containing fat soluble vitamins, cholesterol, and fatty acids. Since eggs contain so many nutrients, some nutritionists have classified them as a super food. In this article, we look at some of the top benefits of eating eggs.

Eggs are highly nutritious

As mentioned above, eggs are one of the most nutritious foods on the planet. A full egg has all the nutrients needed to turn a cell into a chicken. Some of the nutrients contained in an egg include; phosphorus, selenium, zinc, folate, vitamin A, vitamin B5, vitamin B12, vitamin B2, vitamin D, vitamin E, vitamin B6, vitamin K, and calcium. Eggs are therefore considered perfect foods as they contain a small percentage of each nutrient needed for growth. Take a healthier approach by going for pastured or omega-3 enriched eggs.

Eggs do not affect blood cholesterol

It is common that you will hear people say that eggs are very rich in cholesterol, this is true but they have no effect on blood cholesterol. A single egg has about 212mg of cholesterol so if you take two eggs per meal, your intake goes about the daily recommended level of 300mg but you should note that this cholesterol in the diet does not affect your blood cholesterol.

Your liver produces more cholesterol daily but when you eat more eggs, the liver in turn produces less cholesterol that in turn evens out your intake.

Eggs raise HDL

High density lipoprotein (HDL) also known as good cholesterol levels increases when you take eggs. People with high HDL levels are at a low risk of stroke, heart disease, and other health problems. In fact there is a study that shows eating two eggs daily for a duration of six weeks increases you HDL by 10%.

Eggs contain Zeaxanthin and Lutein

As we grow old, our eyesight tends to get worse. There are numerous nutrients that help minimize the degenerative processes that affect our eyes. Two of these nutrients are lutein and zeaxanthin that are contained in eggs; they are very powerful antioxidants that enhance and build the retina. Research shows that adequate intake of the nutrients can minimize the risk of macular degeneration and cataracts, two common eye problems. As earlier mentioned, eggs contain vitamin A and it is known that deficiency of the vitamin may lead to blindness.
